Mulhaupt’s expands business operations, acquires Overhead Door distributorship

Lafayette-headquartered Mulhaupt’s Inc., founded in 1876, has expanded its local operations by adding sales, installation, parts and service of residential and commercial garage doors and industrial overhead doors through a distributor agreement with The Overhead Door Co., the nation’s original manufacturer of such products.

Mulhaupt’s also purchased the assets of the former Lafayette business that was previously licensed to represent Overhead Door. Those operations will move from Canal Road to Mulhaupt’s three-building campus on Fifth Street between Ferry and Main streets in Lafayette, Ind., in the first quarter of 2010, after space is remodeled.

Two employees of the former business have joined the Mulhaupt’s staff. The garage door business will serve 12 Indiana counties: Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fountain, Jasper, Montgomery, Newton, Pulaski, Tippecanoe, Warren and White counties. The Overhead Door division can be reached at 765/742-5844.

“This expansion is a good fit for Mulhaupt’s and our other divisions, which focus on keys, locks, security systems, and metal door frames,” said President Doug Mulhaupt. “It complements our core business and gives us a natural path for growth.”

“We believe the recognized quality of the Overhead Door line and our solid reputation will be a winning combination in the marketplace,” said Chief Operating Officer Timothy Wilson.

Mulhaupt’s Inc. employs 85 people. The business is owned by Michael Gibson, vice president;  Mulhaupt; and Wilson.

Its divisions now include keys and locks, retail hardware, security systems, contract hardware and garage and overhead doors. Besides its three buildings on Fifth Street between Ferry and Main streets in Lafayette, it operates a metal door-frame manufacturing shop at 1128 Main St. Its Lafayette facilities total about 35,000 square feet. It also operates two Indianapolis branches.

Mulhaupt’s designs, supplies, installs, monitors and supports access and security needs for education, healthcare, government, commercial, industrial and residential facilities. Those services include both existing and new construction. Among its products are access controls, keys, locks, builders’ hardware, residential and commercial doors and frames, burglar alarm systems, closed circuit televisions, fire alarm systems, and now, garage and overhead doors.
