SCORE Counselors Offer Free Assistance

Looking for someone to give you some sound business advice? Someone to bounce some ideas off of? That and more is available to local businesses and nonprofits though SCORE, a free business counseling service housed at Greater Lafayette Commerce, which provides office space and support.

“We sit down one-on-one with business owners and discuss any topic related to their business,” says Jerry Holsapple, one of five counselors who volunteer their time. “We try to focus on the problems that are foremost in the minds of business owners. It’s completely confidential. We can meet more than one time, if needed. And it’s always free.”

Sessions are by-appointment, and typically scheduled for a Wednesday, although other times are available.

“We’ve worked with about 70 people in the last 18 months,” Holsapple says. Some are owners of part-time businesses; some head nonprofit organizations.

The service is sponsored by the Small Business Administration. Businesses seeking assistance do not have to be Greater Lafayette Commerce members.

Help can range from getting started in a new business to consulting on expansions, problem-solving, business planning and other areas. Counselors have extensive experience in business and are willing to share their knowledge and experience with others.
